Eight-year study: more childhood screen time linked to better teen cognitive processing — what kids do on screens may matter more than how long
Researchers following the Finnish PANIC cohort for eight years analyzed 260 adolescents (124 girls, 136 boys, average age 15.8) and found that children who accumulated more screen time from childhood showed better cognitive processing in adolescence, measured with the CogState test battery. Physical activity showed a more complicated picture: among girls, more light-intensity activity since childhood was tied to better working memory; among boys, more guided activity was. The study was published in Pediatric Exercise Science (Vol. 38, No. 3).
For parents this is a useful reframing rather than a license: the researchers stress that what children do on screens is probably the key — learning, problem-solving, creativity and other actively thinking activities — and that the goal is balance with physical activity, not screen elimination. Device-tracked activity and sedentary time showed no link to cognition, which suggests the type of activity matters more than raw totals.
This is an observational cohort study, so it shows association, not cause and effect; the authors call for intervention studies to establish causality. It challenges the common assumption that screen time is uniformly harmful, but it is a single study and should not be read as proof that unlimited screens are good.
