Toyota recalls 48,280 Tacoma pickups: shock absorber reservoirs can corrode and detach while driving

Toyota has filed a safety recall covering about 48,280 vehicles — 43,827 Tacoma and 4,453 Tacoma Hybrid pickups from the 2024-2025 model years. The front and rear shock absorbers, supplied by Thyssenkrupp Bilstein, carry an external oil reservoir welded on with a flange whose untreated surfaces can corrode from moisture, salt and rock chips; the weld can then fail and the reservoir can detach while driving, creating a road hazard. Toyota counts 20 field reports and 62 warranty claims tied to the condition.

The remedy is free: dealers will inspect the shock absorber assemblies and replace affected ones with improved parts. Dealers were notified on August 6, and owner notification letters are scheduled to go out between September 21 and October 5, 2026. Owners do not need to wait for the letter — the VIN lookup at nhtsa.gov/recalls shows immediately whether a vehicle is covered.

The recall report was submitted to NHTSA on August 6, 2026. No crashes or injuries are cited in the filing; the risk is the detached part becoming a hazard to other road users.
